It was a fairly gentle introduction to the season’s biggest BSPA event, with a mere 17 matches tonight at Edinburgh Sports Club, a mere nothing compared to what’s to follow on Friday and Saturday when the BSPA, WSA and Graded events get into full swing.
As ever we’ll do our best to keep you as up to date as possible, with daily news stories like this one, regular updates on the Blog, lots of photos in the Gallery, and of course results in the various draws.
For starters here’s a brief roundup of today’s qualifying matches …
Mixed success for Scots
It was a predictably mixed day at the office for the numerous Scottish participants in today’s qualifying rounds.
Macfie, a veteran of the WSA tour who concentrates mainly on masters events these days, was as unhappy with her own game as she always is but still managed to get past compatriot Lauren Gray in three close games.
Lawrie, who is only just returning to serious action after lying low with work commitments for the last few years, also won an all-Scottish match as she beat youngster Mhairi Charlton in four.
The longest match in the men’s qualifying round saw another Scottish Master, Frank Ellis, beat Julian Tomlinson in three tough games, after 45 minutes he was through to face second seed Tom Richards tomorrow.
Local interest was buoyed by wins for Allan Tasker and Simon Boughton, the club pro and tournament director, while Eliot Selby came through in the last match of the day to join siblings Daryl and Lauren in the main draws.
